Found a wasp nest? What to do, and what not to do

Wasp nests are most active in summer and early fall. Most stings happen when someone disturbs a nest without knowing it is there.

What to do

  • Keep a safe distance and keep children and pets away from the area.
  • Watch where the wasps are going in and out so you know exactly where the nest is.
  • Keep doors and windows near the nest closed.
  • Book treatment. Nests in eaves, soffits, decks and sheds are best handled by a professional.

What not to do

  • Do not spray the nest with water or household products.
  • Do not block the nest entrance. Wasps may chew through to the inside of your home.
  • Do not knock down or hit the nest.

Allergies

If anyone near the nest has a known severe allergy to stings, keep them indoors and away from the nest, and follow their medical plan if they are stung.
