How long does bed bug treatment take?
When you have bed bugs, the first thing you want to know is how soon your home will feel normal again. Here is what the process looks like from the first visit to the last, how long each step takes, and what keeps it on track.
How long does bed bug treatment take from start to finish?
A standard professional bed bug treatment is two visits about two weeks apart. Counting the preparation beforehand and the follow-up visit, most Ottawa homes go from the first booking to the end of treatment in roughly three to four weeks.
The treatment visit itself takes a few hours, and you only need to stay out of the treated rooms until the spray has dried. You do not have to move out of your home for the whole process.
How long it takes in your home depends on three things: how far the bed bugs have spread, how much clutter there is around beds and couches, and how well the preparation is done. Your technician confirms the plan after the inspection. If you are not sure you have bed bugs yet, start with our guide to the signs of bed bugs.
The bed bug treatment timeline, step by step
Here is what a typical treatment looks like with us, from the day you book to the weeks after the follow-up.
- Day 1, booking: you book online, pick a day and time window, and we email you to confirm. If you want an unmarked, discreet visit, add it to the notes.
- Before the visit, preparation: you get a step-by-step preparation guide. Most of it is laundry, reducing clutter and emptying the furniture closest to the bed. Plan on a day or two of work, depending on the size of your home.
- Treatment day, inspection: we check beds, frames, headboards, couches and baseboards to confirm it is bed bugs and see how far they have spread.
- Treatment day, steam and spray: steam goes on mattress seams, box springs, frames, headboards, furniture and cracks, then a targeted spray for the bed bugs that were hidden.
- Treatment day, time out: people and pets stay out of the treated rooms until the spray has dried, usually a few hours. Your technician confirms the exact time before leaving.
- About two weeks later, follow-up treatment: a second visit catches bed bugs that hatched from eggs after the first treatment.
- After the follow-up: keep watching for signs, keep any encasements on, and tell us if you see live bed bugs again.
How long do I need to be out of my home after bed bug treatment?
Only for a few hours. Plan to be out of the treated rooms, with your pets, until the spray has dried. Your technician tells you the exact time on the day, because it depends on the rooms treated and the airflow in your home.
Many people book a morning or early-afternoon window and plan errands, work or a visit with family for the rest of the day. You can sleep at home the same night, and in most cases you should: sleeping in your own bed after treatment is part of what makes it work.
Why does bed bug treatment take two visits?
Bed bug eggs are the reason. Steam kills bed bugs and eggs on contact, and the spray reaches bugs tucked into cracks, but eggs glued deep inside a seam, a screw hole or the back of a headboard can survive the first visit and hatch over the next week or two.
The follow-up treatment about two weeks later is timed to catch those young bed bugs after they hatch and before they are old enough to lay eggs of their own. That is why the follow-up is included in our bed bug treatment price rather than sold as an extra. A treatment plan with only one visit leaves that gap open.
How long does it take for bed bugs to die after treatment?
Bed bugs and eggs that the steam reaches die on contact during the visit. The spray keeps working on surfaces after it dries, so bugs that come out of hiding and cross treated areas over the following days are also affected.
Most homes notice far fewer bugs and new bites within the first one to two weeks. Because eggs can still hatch after the first visit, the full result is judged after the follow-up treatment, not the morning after the first one.
Is it normal to see bed bugs after treatment?
Yes. Seeing a few bed bugs for a short time after treatment is normal. Bugs that were hidden deep in furniture come out and cross treated surfaces. Here is how to handle that period:
- Keep sleeping in your own bed unless your technician says otherwise. Moving to the couch or a spare room can spread bed bugs to new places and slow the whole treatment down.
- Do not use store-bought sprays, powders or bug bombs between visits. They can scatter bed bugs into other rooms and into walls.
- Vacuum often, and empty the vacuum into a sealed bag that goes straight to the outside garbage.
- Note where and when you see bugs. It tells the technician where to focus on the follow-up.
- If you still see live bed bugs after the follow-up treatment, tell us. Re-treatment is covered by our six-month guarantee.
- If bites are very itchy or look infected, see a pharmacist or doctor.
What makes bed bug treatment take longer?
Some homes need more time than others. These are the most common reasons:
- Skipped preparation, so the steam and spray cannot reach seams, drawers and edges where bed bugs hide.
- Heavy clutter around beds and couches, which gives bed bugs more places to hide and makes them harder to reach.
- Moving items or furniture between rooms before treatment, which carries bed bugs into rooms that were clean.
- Neighbouring units that are not checked. In Ottawa apartment and condo buildings, bed bugs can travel between units, so tell your landlord or property manager. Our guide to cockroaches in apartments explains the same shared-wall problem with roaches.
- Bringing bed bugs back in: check luggage after trips, especially around holiday travel, and inspect second-hand furniture and mattresses before they come inside.
- Waiting too long to book. A small problem in one bed is faster to treat than one that has spread to couches and other bedrooms.
How to prepare so treatment stays on schedule
Good preparation is the biggest thing you control. Our full bed bug treatment preparation checklist goes through it room by room. The short version:
- Start the preparation as soon as you book, so you are ready on the day and the visit does not have to be moved.
- Wash and dry bedding and clothes from the bedroom on high heat, then keep them in sealed bags until the technician says to put them back.
- Clear clutter from around beds, couches and baseboards, and empty bedside tables and the lowest drawers near the bed.
- Pull beds and couches a little away from the walls.
- Do not throw out your mattress or furniture unless the technician advises it. Most mattresses can be treated and kept.
- Ask about mattress and box-spring encasements. Your technician can advise whether they make sense for your bed.
- Keep the follow-up appointment, even if you have stopped seeing bugs.
Can I treat bed bugs myself instead?
Store-bought sprays, powders and bug bombs are the most common reason a bed bug problem drags on for months. Bed bugs hide in seams, screw holes, outlets and the joints of furniture, where sprays from a can do not reach, and foggers tend to push them deeper into walls and into other rooms. That usually makes the professional treatment that follows take longer.
There is a lot you can do yourself that genuinely helps: high-heat laundry, reducing clutter, vacuuming, and checking luggage and second-hand furniture. Leave the treatment itself to a licensed technician.
What happens on treatment day?
- Have the preparation done before the technician arrives, with bedding bagged and beds and couches pulled away from the walls.
- Show the technician where you have seen bugs or woken up with bites. It tells them where to start.
- Plan where you and your pets will be until the treated rooms are ready. Take medications, chargers and anything you need for the afternoon with you.
- Before leaving, the technician tells you when you can go back into each room and when to put bedding back on.
- Book your follow-up treatment for about two weeks later before the technician leaves, so it is in the calendar.
How do I know the treatment worked?
After the follow-up treatment, the signs should stop: no new bites, no fresh dark spots on the sheets, and no live bugs in the seams when you check. Checking the mattress seams and bed frame with a flashlight once a week for a while is a simple way to be sure. Mattress encasements make this easier, because any bed bug left inside is trapped and anything on the outside is easy to see.
If you see live bed bugs after the follow-up, it does not mean starting over. Tell us, and re-treatment is covered by the six-month guarantee.
Quick answers about bed bug treatment
- Do I need to throw out my mattress? Usually not. Treated mattresses can be kept, and encasements trap any bugs left inside.
- Can I sleep at home after treatment? Yes, once the treated rooms are ready. Sleeping in your own bed helps the treatment work.
- Will the follow-up cost extra? No. The follow-up treatment is included in the flat price.
- Can bed bugs come back? They can be brought back in from travel, visitors or second-hand furniture. If they return within six months, we re-treat for free.
- Can you come discreetly? Yes. Mention it in the notes when you book.
Who pays for bed bug treatment in an Ottawa rental?
If you rent, tell your landlord or property manager before you book. In Ottawa, treating pests in a rental unit is generally the landlord's responsibility, and tenants are expected to prepare the unit. In a building, the landlord may also arrange to check the units next to yours, which helps stop bed bugs coming back.
How much does bed bug treatment cost in Ottawa?
Our bed bug treatment is one flat price of $399 plus HST for your home, whether it is a downtown condo, a townhouse in Nepean or a house in Kanata, Barrhaven or Orléans.
